HEPHZIBAH, Ga. (WRDW / WAGT) – Fans fill the stands at Hephzibah High School as they kick off the football season. You can feel the energy behind the program with their new head coach. It’s almost like a breath of fresh air or pushing the reset button after a weird season last year. And their coach hopes to get more visibility by changing some things.
Head football coach Daniel Dorsey knows a thing or two about small town football, he worked in rural South Georgia before Hephzibah. Friday nights in the field are familiar.
âI feel like it’s small town football, even though we are part of the RCSS and we are associated with Augusta. It really has the small town football feel of Friday night, âhe said.
This is one of the reasons Coach Dorsey thinks they are not getting any love. He says the lack of coverage and attention really hurt their program and take the kids to the next level.
âI feel like we have as much talent as anyone in the region and the state. It’s just about putting them in a position to be noticed and seen by coaches and scouts, âhe said.
Dorsey tries to put Hephzibah in the spotlight. He took over as head of Hephzibah’s football program before the start of last season. It was anything but normal, mix that up with COVID, and they finished with a record 3 and 5.
âOur expectation is to come out and be better than last year,â he said.
This offseason has been full of changes, including the addition of a whole new staff. Guys with college experience who know what it takes to take it to the next level.
âThis year we’ve had a full offseason, a full summer of implementing ideas, philosophies and principles,â he said.
They hope to return to the playoffs and show off some of the talent they believe can rival anyone in the state.
âI’m super excited. We’ve done all the hard work and all the scrimmages and now it’s time to go out and cash that check,â he said.
The program believes they can compete with anyone in the state. They say it’s about us being there and getting that exposure for their players so they can get noticed.
