EUGENE, Oregon – The Head Coach Dan Lanning on Friday announced the hiring of Matt Powledge as Oregon’s new defensive football coordinator.
Powledge is the second addition to Lanning’s coaching staff in 2022, joining offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kenny Dillingham.

Powledge comes to Oregon after spending the last two seasons as Baylor’s safety coach and special teams coordinator. He was also the Special Teams Coordinator for Sam Houston State (2014-15), Louisiana Monroe (2016-17) and Louisiana (2018-19).

Powledge helped Baylor go 11-2 and win the Big 12 Championship this season, earning a berth in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Under Powledge, safety Jalen Pitre won Consensus All-America and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors after leading the conference with 17.5 tackles for a loss. He finished with 70 total tackles and added three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions and seven stoppages.
Pitre was also a finalist for the 2021 Jim Thorpe Award, awarded to the country’s best defensive back. In 2020, Powledge coached Pitre to an All-Big 12 first-team selection while his fellow safety Christian Morgan and JT Woods each had three interceptions to earn an honorable mention of the entire conference.
Kick returner Trestan Ebner was the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year in each of his two seasons with Powledge as the Special Teams coordinator, winning second-team All- team consensus honors. America in 2020. He racked up 603 total return yards with a 98-yard return for a touchdown in 2021, and he became the first player in modern Baylor history to return two kickoffs for touchdowns. in the same game in an outstanding performance against Kansas in 2020.
Powledge traveled to Baylor from Louisiana, where he worked as an outside linebacker coach and special teams coordinator in 2018 and 2019. In Lafayette, Powledge coached six All-Sun Belt artists and helped the Rajin ‘Cajuns backpacks. à dos Sun Belt Western Division titles.
Powledge helped head coach Billy Napier and defensive coordinator Ron Roberts lead the Rajin ‘Cajuns to the program’s first-ever 10-game winning season of 2018. In 2019, Powledge’s special teams unit ranked first or second in the league in defense of kickoff return, kickoff return, and net clearance, and he helped outside linebacker Joe Dillon take full SBC second team honors.
The tight ends coach and special teams coordinator at ULM in 2016 and 2017, Powledge coached kicking returner Marcus Green to a stellar season before leaving for Louisiana. Green ran four kickoffs for touchdowns in 2017 averaging 32.4 yards per return.
A former Sam Houston State alumnus, Powledge returned to his alma mater as a running back coach and special teams coordinator in 2014 and 2015. He coached five full honors from the first or second. Southland’s second team, with two special teams players taking home full honors. America honors after the 2014 season. The Bearkats were one of six teams across the country in 2014 to block multiple punts and return two or more for touchdowns.
Powledge made his coaching debut as an assistant graduate from Southeast Louisiana in 2010 before moving to tight ends coach in 2011. He went to Northwestern State as a running backs coach in 2012. and was a graduate assistant in Kentucky in 2013 before returning to Sam State of Houston.
A native of Huntsville, TX, Powledge played Sam Houston State fullback (2005-09) and served as team captain and Southland winner as a senior. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology in 2009.
