Aiming for the 2023 International Championship in Ireland

The Nigeria America Football Association (NAFA) has invited 80 players, mostly high school students, for the combined Lagos U-18 flag football screening ahead of the formation of a national team.

According to NAFA, the U-18 scouting and competition, to be held at King’s College, Lagos, from September 14-16 for both boys and girls, is organized by the Federation to prepare a young national team to compete in an international competition. The IFAF U-18 tournament is set to be held in Ireland next year. This gave NAFA the opportunity to develop young players who will be drafted into the envisioned senior national team in the future.

He said coaches with experience and exposure in the sport would oversee the showing of the U-18 flag football.

Speaking to The Guardian yesterday, NAFA General Secretary Lawrence Ojaideh said player selection would be done through a rigorous process to ensure there is a strong flag football squad.

“The Lagos U-18 flag football showing would involve most of the outstanding players who represented their schools in the inaugural Flag Football Championship held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

“The tryout process would take place in an organized fashion from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day for three days to ensure that the best players are selected.

“Eighty players, including 40 boys and 40 girls, will take part in the exercise. Flag football is the first process of American football at the junior level before moving to the senior level.

“We have to get it right at the U-18 level to make American football a strong force in Nigeria. Players will be tested in all departments of Flag Football.

“The team will represent Lagos State in the National Flag Football Championship in the near future.”

Ojaideh said scouting for the senior national team, which is the sport’s contact level, would take place in November.

He added, “NAFA’s goal to grow flag football and American football in the country has yielded positive results as we recently received jerseys from an NFL club, Detroit Lions player, who ordered us to give them to the winners of the Nigeria Secondary Schools 2022 Flag Football League (NSSFFL).

“The winners, Greensprings, received their shirts on September 5 at the school’s parade ground.”
