Pittsburgh, No. 17, and Tennessee, No. 24, played out three tightly contested first quarters on Saturday as the Volunteers took a 24-17 lead over the Panthers in the fourth quarter. The third quarter was a scoreless battle, but the first half of the game was action-packed as Pitt hosts an SEC opponent at Acrisure Stadium for the first time in program history.
The Panthers held the high-powered Vols scoreless on their first three possessions while cashing in with a 76-yard touchdown run from Israel Abanikanda to take a 10-0 first-quarter lead. But Tennessee didn’t stay down long, scoring touchdowns on three straight possessions later in the first half before both teams clinched in the third quarter.
The status of Pittsburgh starting quarterback Kedon Slovis has become a hot topic after USC’s transfer took a big hit in the Panthers’ last play in the second quarter. With Slovis still in the locker room after halftime, veteran backup Nick Patti took over quarterback duties for Pitt in the third quarter.
