UIndy football player offers to become team manager in post-match caucus

Jordan Bentley was busier than usual on Saturday. She’s been the manager of the University of Indianapolis football team for six years, and it was Senior Day.

“I was late today. My brain was a little muddled, ”she said.

Her boyfriend, Cory Klem, didn’t care. He is also in his sixth year with the Greyhounds program as a defensive lineman. It was also his Senior Day. But he had something else in mind. His girlfriend would soon be his fiancée.

The two didn’t speak much before the game and only exchanged a few words during the fourth quarter.

“The game gave me a great distraction. I was nervous before the game. When the match started, I concentrated and forgot what was going to happen afterwards, ”he said. “I went there and did what I had to do, then after that I did what I had to do.”

UIndy defeated William Jewell 45-14. The starters were eliminated in the fourth quarter. Klem got the ring from one of the other managers on the team.

“That’s when I got really nervous,” he said. “Once we started walking to shake hands with the other team, that’s when it started to hit me. “

Football coach Chris Keevers has called the team together for their usual post-game huddle. He asked Bentley and the other senior manager to join the team.

“I didn’t think much about it at the time. I just thought he was doing it to recognize me and the other senior manager, ”Bentley said. “I was like ‘Wow, that was really cool.'”

After Keevers gave his speech, he called on Klem to stand up. Bentley assumed he was going to break up the group.

“Then I saw the box in his hand,” she said.

“Once we got to caucus and Coach Keevers gave a speech, my heart was pounding,” Klem said. “The next thing I knew, I was on my knees and the whole team was going crazy. It was just amazing.

Klem had thought for days about what to say.

“It was all put aside and I just asked her to marry me,” he said.

She said yes.

Klem managed to keep the plan a secret. Only his coaches, a few teammates and a few members of his family knew about it. Bentley’s father even managed to keep the secret from his mother.

“I think she was as surprised as I was. It was really cool to share this moment with my family, friends and family, as well as all the guys, ”said Bentley. “It was something really special for both of us, for sure.”

Although Klem and Bentley have been part of the football program for so long, they only met a few years ago, through a mutual friend. And it wasn’t exactly love at first sight.

“Ironically, when we first met we didn’t really like each other,” Bentley said. “But we grew up on top of each other.

“I’m a little anti-social so we didn’t really hit it off right away,” Klem said. “It took us a few months to get to know each other and show this affection for each other. It was a little slow, but once it hit it hit.

The couple will celebrate their two years together this weekend.

“There was a joke between him and me that he would do it on our senior day,” Klem said. “I’ve always joked, ‘Time is running out. I never really pushed for this to happen faster than it had to happen naturally. “

For now, they’re just enjoying the moment. UIndy Football’s Twitter account tweeted a video of the proposal, which has been liked over 1,000 times. The moment was also shared widely on Facebook.

“It wasn’t the plan, I guess, to go viral,” Bentley said.

The couple have yet to decide on a wedding date. They have a busy year ahead of them. Bentley has rotations to complete, a doctoral thesis, and upcoming exams. Both graduate in May and must find a job. Maybe they’ll get married next fall. Maybe they will wait.

“We soak up everything,” Bentley said. “It was a crazy race, for sure. I was blown away by the amount of encouraging words, kind messages and thoughts. It is truly a blessing and a gift.
